Spring time - early summer and the calves are born at our farm. We have 6 little ones now and there are two more coming. Most of the time the mother cow seek shelter in the barn when it is time but it is not too uncommon for them to give birth in the forest also thus my father and nephews have done more than one calf search recently.
When we - me and my brother - were kids, our grand parents used to sell the milk the cows produced, thus the calves were then fed by us and not by their mothers directly which made them very tame (we used to lead them in ropes, like little dogs, to get them out of the barn and so on). These days we do not sell the milk any longer thus the calves drink it directly from their mother and stay outdoors all the time which makes them more shy to us humans.
