As a scout you are supposed to be "always ready", but ready for what? It's not possible to be ready for everything, is it? If that was what you were supposed to be, then he felt ashamed and did not know if he was fully a scout. Because, to be honest, some of the things that could happen just scared the bejeesuz out of him and he would never be able to be ready for that.
